^* Mac OS X Panther (10.3.x) comes with an almost complete version of Python 2.3, so all you need are the add-ons, i.e. IDE, etc. It is not recommended to install newer versions of the same release, i.e. 2.3.1+, unless you know how to properly decouple the installed 2.3 (which annoyingly doesn't come with readline compiled in).
